Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Behavior Therapy examines confused or distorted patterns of thinking to help improve a child's moods, anxiety and behavior. CBT therapists teach children to identify harmful thought patterns that cause feelings and moods which can influence behavior. The therapist then helps the child replace harmful thoughts with more appropriate feelings and behaviors. CBT research has shown to be a very effective in treating depression, anxiety and many other conditions.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is psychotherapy with multiple patients led by one or more therapists who use group dynamics and peer interactions to increase understanding of mental illness and to improve social skills. There are many different types of group therapy (e.g. psychodynamic, social skills, substance abuse, multi-family, parent support, etc.).
Play Therapy
Play Therapy helps children recognize, identify, and verbalize feelings by using toys, blocks, dolls, puppets, drawings and games.The therapist observes and identifies themes or patterns how the child uses play materials to understand the child's problems. To better understand and manage the child’s’ conflicts, feelings, and behavior, a combination of talk and play is used.

Weight Management
One Step Forward Wellness Center provides a weight management comprehensive evaluation that includes the following:
- Weight & body composition analysis & evaluations to identify weight related diseases
- Nutritional evaluations to identify current dietary habits and willingness, ability, and resources available to change current habits to promote weight loss
- Physical activity evaluations to identify current amount of physical activity and willingness, ability, and resources available to increase physical activity
- Psychosocial screening evaluations to identify problems that may interfere with a child’s ability to participate in a lifestyle program designed to promote weight loss
1. Does my child need occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy benefits children who have delays in fine and gross motor skills (hopping, skipping, catching a ball, coloring, cutting with scissors) sensory processing (sounds, bright lights, and self care skills (eating, dressing).
2. Does my child need speech therapy?
Speech therapy benefits children who are not talking, uses “baby talk”, has a hearing impairment, not talking in complete sentences, are hard to understand to stutter or have rough or hoarse voices.
3. Does my child need physical therapy?
Physical therapy is beneficial to children who have a physical impairment which might include: difficulty with gross motor skills such as walking, running, playing on playground equipment or stair climbing
4. How is private occupational or physical therapy different from the therapy provided at my child’s public school?
The child must qualify for special education services set up by the State of Maryland to receive occupational or physical therapy at public school. Some children do not qualify for the state requirements and may need additional therapy
5. How is private speech therapy different from the therapy provided at my child’s public school?

6. Will my insurance cover occupational, physical or speech therapy services?
It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company to find out if you have coverage for therapy services since they all vary. You also are responsible for determining your deductible and subsequent co-insurance for therapy.
7. How often will my child need occupational, physical or speech therapy services?
Most children receiving services attend 1-2 times per week for 30 or 45 minute sessions depending on the evaluation and will be made by you and your therapist.
8. How long will my child need occupational, physical or speech therapy?
The length of time needed for therapy varies widely from child to child. Regular communication between you and your therapist will guide this decision.
9. What steps do I need to take to obtain an occupational, physical or speech therapy evaluation at One Step Forward?
Call us at (301) 731 - 0003 to give us your concerns about your child and answer any questions you might have. Before scheduling your occupational or physical therapy evaluation the State of Maryland requires a physician’s prescription for therapy services even if you will not be filing insurance. You can simply call their office and ask them to fax the prescription to our office at 301-731-4838. Upon receipt of your prescription, we will call you to set up the evaluation. Speech evaluations do not require a physician’s prescription and we can often schedule your speech evaluation when you make your initial inquiry.
